Jessica Chastain’s ‘Other Mommy’ tops the North American box office
Universal’s low-budget horror opened at No. 1 with $27.5 million despite a D+ CinemaScore. Aaron Sorkin’s Facebook drama ‘The Social Reckoning’ opened fifth.

Other Mommy, Universal’s horror film starring Jessica Chastain, opened at the top of the North American box office over the weekend of 9–11 October with an estimated $27.5 million from 3,365 theatres, according to studio estimates reported by AP.
It added $17.6 million from 50 international markets, TheWrap reported, for a global opening of about $45.2 million. The film cost about $19 million to make. Audiences gave it a D+ CinemaScore, which TheWrap called the lowest since Megalopolis two years earlier.
Directed by Rob Savage and based on Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, the film casts Chastain as both the mother and the “Other Mommy”.
Verity placed second with $11.5 million, down 64%, and Resident Evil was third with $8.4 million, taking its North American total to $138.5 million. Sony’s The Social Reckoning, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, opened fifth with $5.5 million from 2,606 theatres and a B- CinemaScore, on a budget of about $30 million.
North American box office for the year passed $8 billion on Friday, up more than 19% on last year, AP reported.
Weekend figures are studio estimates; final numbers can differ slightly.
